 Profile

Matthew Wade walked straight into Victoria's Pura Cup team after transferring from Tasmania in the 2007 off-season and immediately made an impact, scoring 83 and pouching six catches in his first-class debut. Wade was only 19 at the time but he had already spent a winter at the Academy and had been part of Australia's Under-19 World Cup squad in 2005-06. His batting potential was the reason he leap-frogged the incumbent wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite and he finished the season with 335 runs at 27.91, and a top score of 95 against his former state. His glovework was adequate but a lack of runs late in the season led to him losing his spot in favour of Crosthwaite for the last two games, including the Pura Cup final. A talented left-hand batsman capable of long stays at the crease, Wade was also a skilled Australian Rules footballer and could have pursued an AFL career. His only match for Tasmania was a one-day game in 2006-07 when he played as a specialist batsman, and the presence of the established wicketkeepers Sean Clingeleffer and Tim Paine prompted his move to the mainland.
