Emma Sampson has long been on the road to the Australian national side
having spent three years as part of the squad, breaking into
the side at just 18. Her graduation into the senior team, then, has surprised few
in South Australia and the recently retired Cathryn Fitzpatrick has
described Sampson as "exciting" and believes she has the skills to take the new
ball for some time to come, while building up her strength and ultimately bowling faster. Although her international debut was hardly a
dream start with Australia being beaten by New Zealand for the first time in
three years, Australia had the last laugh in the final of February's
Quadrangular series and Sampson chipped in with 1 for 29 from 8 overs. Still only
young, it is hoped that she will continue to develop and add some extra pace
to her bowling but her success in the domestic league - not to mention picking up the Player of the Series award in Australia's series squeak over New Zealand in 2008 - over the past couple of seasons suggests the future is bright. Alan Curr April 2008
