A very capable all-rounder, Ian Hewett started his interstate career as a
teenager back in the 1995-96 season. His entry to domestic cricket was not
without controversy; following his opening first-class match, it became
public that Umpires Hair and Stratford had raised doubts over the legitimacy
of his bowling action in their official reports from the game. He has yet to
carve a permanent niche for himself in Victorian teams in either four-day or
limited-overs cricket, but nonetheless remains a highly regarded member of
the state's squad. His bowling - which takes the form of accurate and brisk
left arm medium pace - is probably the slightly stronger facet of his game,
though he is also a very useful left handed batsman capable of hitting the
ball with authority to all parts of the wicket. Tall and relatively lightly
built, he was raised in Melbourne, was a member of the state's under-17 and
under-19 sides, and was a full-time scholar at the Australian Cricket
Academy in 1995. (John Polack, June 2002)
