Ryan Campbell has announced his retirement from domestic cricket, effective after this week's matches against Queensland at Perth.

Campbell, 33, played two one-day internationals for Australia in 2002, and made 91 first-class appearances for Western Australia, scoring 5742 runs, including 11 hundreds, and taking 244 catches and 13 stumpings.

"When I sat bolt upright in bed at 4am on Monday I just knew the time was right," Campbell told reporters. "I've always wanted to go out on my terms while I've still been at the top of my game. It's been an incredibly tough decision to make.

"It's been an incredible privilege over the last 12 years to play for Western Australia and Australia. I'll walk away not only with a lifetime of memories but, most importantly, I'll walk away having made some great mates playing the game I love."

Warriors Coach Wayne Clark, who has coached Campbell for nine years of his 12-year career, expressed his gratitude to one of the most exciting players to have ever represented Western Australia. "It's been a pleasure to have been a part of Cambo's career for so long," he said. "He will go down as one of the greats of Western Australian cricket not only for his efforts with the gloves and the bat but also for his leadership and team spirit. We've always been able to count on Cambo no matter what the situation and his influence around the team will be sorely missed."

Campbell currently sits ninth on the list of run scorers for the State in Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup matches, with over 5000 career runs. He also sits fourth for the number of dismissals by a wicketkeeper for WA in Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup cricket with over 200 dismissals.

"Ryan has been an integral part of Western Australia cricket for the last decade and the excitement he has brought to the WACA over the years will be missed," Tony Dodemaide, Wetsern Australia's CEO, said. "On behalf of everyone at the WACA and everyone involved in cricket in Western Australia I'd like to put on the record our thanks to Ryan for his service to the game here in WA."

Campbell will bow out as a first-team player after being named as a replacement for Marcus North, who has been ruled out with a broken finger, for tomorrow's game. Campbell's final match for Western Australia will be the Pura Cup fixture against Queensland, which begins Sunday.
