A seven-wicket haul from David Bandy almost earned Western Australia first-innings points within a day but at stumps they were still 27 runs short of Queensland's 139. Chris Rogers made 55 and Marcus North was 30 as the Warriors went to the close at 2 for 112.

Bandy, who had never bagged more than three wickets in a first-class innings, took 7 for 44 with his swinging medium-pacers to justify Justin Langer's decision to send Queensland in. He extracted good movement in the overcast Brisbane conditions and after trapping both Lachlan Stevens and Shane Watson cheaply at the top of the innings returned to remove the last five Bulls.

The home side lost their final six wickets for 28 after Jimmy Maher tried in vain to anchor the innings. He edged Brett Dorey to slip for 42 and no other Queensland batsman made it past 20.

Although Watson's long-awaited return to first-class cricket was a disappointment with the bat - he made 7 from 18 deliveries - there were good signs as he bowled late in the day. Watson completed two overs and removed the dangerous Rogers to finish with 1 for 9.
