Pakistan trample over Scotland

In a performance that nearly rivalled Bermuda's 13 all out, Scotland folded for 26 in reply to Pakistan's 278 at the Van der Stel Club in Stellenbosch. Just like in Bermuda's appalling defeat to South Africa, here too extras boosted Scotland's total. Eleven were conceded in the 28.3 overs that Scotland batted. Charlotte Bascombe's six was the top score of the innings.

Urooj Mumtaz, looking to give her batsmen a chance to get some runs under their belt ahead of the semi-finals tomorrow, chose to bat first. Considering the quality of their opposition, opener Tasqeen Qadeer will curse herself was being dismissed cheaply when she was caught off Abbie Aitken for 14. Aitken, who took two wickets in her 10 overs, was the only Scotland bowler not to concede an extra, while the others combined to give away 42 runs as extras.

Sajjida Shah and Bismah Maroof added 76 together to take Pakistan past 100. Then Kari Anderson struck thrice in two overs to reduce Pakistan to 110 for 4. But Scotland couldn't take advantage of the breakthrough and Shah added 109 with Sana Mir to steer Pakistan towards a total which was far beyond Scotland's reach. Anderson was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5 for 61. But she bowled seven wides in her 10 overs. Shah followed her exploits with the bat, with three wickets for six runs with her offbreak bowling.

Ireland 305 for 5 (I Joyce 70, Shillington 57) beat Zimbabwe 97 (Joyce 4-10) by 208 runs

A fine all-round display from Isobel Joyce was the cornerstone for Ireland's massive 208-run win over Zimbabwe to book a place in the semi-finals. The result also guarantees them a place in the top ten of the world rankings and therefore their ODI status for the next four years.

Joyce hit a 63-ball 70 as Ireland piled up an imposing 305 for 5 with Clare Shillington adding a rapid 57. Zimbabwe used 10 bowlers with little impact and the extreme number of wides in the tournament with 30. They didn't put up much of a fight in reply as Joyce continued her tour de force with five cheap wickets and the only blot on Ireland's copybook was 23 wides.

South Africa 277 for 4 (Brits 107*, Minnie 73) beat Netherlands 50 (Kilowan 3-8) by 227 runs

South Africa continued their unhindered progress with a monstrous 227-run win over Netherlands. Captain Cri-zelda Brits hit her first ODI century, facing 130 balls for an unbeaten 107 and batting for all but five balls of the innings.

The major partnership came with Annelie Minnie, who made a career-best 73, as 126 were added for the third wicket in 22 overs. The innings was rounded off in style by Alicia Smith's 30-ball 45.

Netherlands' innings was a torturous experience as they scored at barely one-an-over. Helmien Rambaldo, the captain, was the only player to reach double figures with 19 (from 89 balls) and the 41-over innings brought just one boundary. The wickets were shared around, Ashlyn Kilowan finishing with 3 for 8 off eight overs, and unsurprisingly none of the attack conceded even two-an-over.

Papua New Guinea 223 for 9 (Amini 65) beat Bermuda 44 (Jackson 8) by 179 runs

Bermuda crawled to another embarrassing loss, this time at the hands of Papua New Guinea who won by 179 runs. If nothing else, Bermuda's 7000-mile trip to South Africa for this series has reminded them of their place in the world of women's cricket.

It was another pitiful effort with bat and ball from Bermuda. Their bowlers gifted 61 extras in PNG's 223 for 9 with Shunta Todd, their opening bowler, struggling to find the cut strip (12 wides) while Maryellen Jackson offered a further nine. Kune Amini, their 43-year-old captain, top-scored with 65 from 102 balls and Papua New Guinea's 223 was always going to be far too many for Bermuda.

Yet again, extras top-scored with 12 as Bermuda were bowled out for a pitiful 44. There were five ducks, and although Todd hung around 45 balls, she only made 6 as Bermuda laboured their way to defeat in the 31st over. Linda Mienzer, the captain, was out for her second duck of the series; she has managed just one, lonely single in three matches.

PNG's bowlers maintained a stricter line, only conceding 12 extras, as Karo Lumis (3 for 10) and Mebo Ipi (3 for 11) shared the wickets to complete a resounding win.
