Russell returns to Gloucestershire

February 26, 2008

Jack Russell, the former England wicketkeeper, is returning to Gloucestershire as team strategist, effectively taking over the role of Mark Alleyne who left as coach earlier this year. Russell will be responsible for off the pitch guidance in all playing matters.

He retired in 2004 having joined the club in 1981 and has since occasionally been involved with coaching. "It is an honour to be asked and it is great to be back. I am looking forward to the challenge tremendously," said Russell.

Jon Lewis, Gloucestershire's captain, said: "I have always enjoyed a fantastic working relationship with Jack, and he has been inspirational to me and the team in the past. I know he will throw himself into this role 100% and it can only be a good thing to have him back within the dressing room."

During his career Russell played 465 first-class matches, scoring 16861 runs and claiming 1192 catches along with 128 stumpings. He was part of the Gloucestershire side that became a one-day force with regular appearances in Lord's finals.
