Luke Wright has said it was 'scary' to see Steve Kirby, one of his best friends, lying on the dressing room floor after being knocked out by his bouncer on the second day of Sussex's match against MCC and Lord's.

Kirby was struck when he ducked into a sharp short ball then, after unsteadily making his way off the field, passed out again in the dressing room before being taken to hospital. He was kept in overnight for observation before being released on Saturday morning then returned home via a quick stop at Lord's for some lunch.

"I'd never seen anything like that happen before so it shook me up a bit," Wright said after making a career-best 155 during the third day's play. "When he left the pitch I thought that was it but to walk into the changing room and see him still on the floor was quite scary. I kept in touch with all the guys about how he was and you never want to see something like that."

Wright has known Kirby since he began his county career with Leicestershire before moving south to Sussex in 2004. The two won't play each other in the Championship this season as their counties are in separate divisions although could meeting during a Pro40 game at Cheltenham later in the summer.

"I've seen Kirbs, we've had a little hug and I'm sure I'll get a few back my way at some point," said Wright. "I'm sure we'll have a drink and laugh about it in the future."
