James Sutherland was a medium-fast bowler who became a versatile off-field allrounder. Twelfth man for Victoria's 1990-91 Sheffield Shield victory, Sutherland played four first-class matches and became a Level III coach who was a state assistant in 1998-99. A chartered accountant, Sutherland worked as a finance manager with Carlton, the AFL club, for six years and in 1998 joined the Australian Cricket Board as a general manager, commercial. During that period he was involved in the bitter pay dispute between the board and its players, and in July 2001 accepted the ACB's chief executive's position when Malcolm Speed departed. A life member of the Melbourne University club, where he was also a coach, Sutherland played in three first-grade premierships during a 17-year career.
