England v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Chester-le-Street

Strauss earns surprise call-up

Cricinfo staff

June 14, 2008

Andrew Strauss has been handed a surprise call-up to England's one-day squad as cover for Alastair Cook, who is suffering from a shoulder injury which could rule him out of selection for the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday.

Strauss was dropped from England's one-day side after the World Cup, and had only managed one fifty in his last 14 ODIs. After a pleasing return to the Test team this year, however - with two fifties in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand - he could yet get an opportunity in one of the five one-dayers.

Cook sustained the injury to his shoulder on the final day of the third Test at Trent Bridge, missing out on England's thumping win in Friday's Twenty20, and was unable to train with the rest of the squad today. Should Cook's injury continue, the selectors could keep Strauss in the squad for the second ODI which gets underway at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
