Sunil Gavaskar to head NCA, Shivlal Yadav back as national selector

Santhosh S

September 30, 2001

Proceedings on the second day of the 72nd Annual General Meeting of the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI), here in Chennai on Sunday, were conducted on a harmonious note. Any hints of backdoor politics were left entirely behind as the Board concentrated on the business of running the day-to-day affairs of the game in India. The BCCI made two new appointments today; Sunil Gavaskar has been appointed as the new Chairman of the National Cricket Academy, replacing the controversial Raj Singh Dungarpur, and Shivlal Yadav replaces TA Shekar in the National Selection Committee as the representative from the South Zone.

BCCI Media Release

Chennai, 30 September 2001

The Senior Selection Committee consists of Chandu Borde (Chairman), Shivlal Yadav, Madan Lal, Ashok Malhotra and Sanjay Jagdale.

The Junior Selection Committee consists of V Chamundeswarathi (Chairman), Kamal Das, Anurag Thankur, Ashok Bhagawat and Bhagirath Thakore.

Sunil Gavaskar was appointed the new Chairman of the Board's National Cricket Academy, on the resignation of Raj Singh Dungarpur. Brijesh Patel continues to be the Director of the Academy. The President, BCCI will form a Committee in consultation with the Chairman and the Director for the operations of the NCA.

Col. AD Sharma was appointed as the Manager of the Indian team that would participate in the triangular Series in Bangladesh in January 2002 featuring India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. John Wright and Andrew Leipus would continue as the Coach and the Physical Trainer respectively. The President, BCCI was authorized to nominate the Managers for the Indian team's tours of West Indies (March-April 2002).

Domestic cricket had suffered a jolt because of the ruling given by the Chairman in the Annual General Meeting on 29th September 2001. Today, the body unanimously withdrew the suspension from the Goa Cricket Association in order that cricket in Goa did not suffer. The Show Cause Notice served on Goa Cricket Association by the Board earlier was however, not withdrawn and proper procedures of the inquiry on the tickets scam would be on.

The Board has decided to recognize and affiliate the three newly formed States of Jharkhand, Uttaranchal and Chattisgarh within 28 February 2002, commensurate with their respective standards of cricket. The report of the sub-committee formed by the Board would be studied by the Working Committee and placed before a Special General Meeting for approval before 28 February 2002.

It was decided that the President, BCCI would form a Committee to run the domestic cricket in Bihar and Jharkand in the 2001-2001 season.

The proposal of Gradation Payment to the players was accepted in principle. It was however, decided that the specific details of the gradation would be reviewed by the Working Committee and placed before a Special General Meeting for approval within 28 February 2002.
