England v Australia, third Test, Headingley, 1975

Vandals stopped play

Chris Old on the time protesters dug up the pitch the night before the last day of a Test match

Chris Old: Going into the last day, we thought we could win. We had the new ball and Australia were three down for 220 (both Chappells were out), chasing about 450. I was driving to the ground - since I stayed nearby - when I heard on the radio that the game had been abandoned because of damage to the pitch, caused by supporters of the "Free George Davis" campaign. George Davis had been imprisoned for bank robbery and his friends felt that he shouldn't have been in jail. When I got to the gates, the big chap manning them wasn't going to let me in as the game was off. A lot of the damage to the surface didn't appear to be in crucial areas, but it surely would've helped our spinners to some degree. Unfortunately a good contest had to be brought to an end for no fault of the cricketers. Photograph by Getty Images
