New Zealand ahead after de Boorder ton

Cricinfo staff

February 4, 2007

India Under-19s 124 and 76 for 0 trail New Zealand Under-19s 300 (de Boorder 109, Rawal 70, Morgan 34, Chawla 4-59, Sharma 3-104) by 100 runs

New Zealand Under-19s hold the advantage after running away to a healthy 176-run lead. India Under-19s fought back in the second essay, reaching 76 without losing a wicket at close of play on the second day at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

New Zealand, overnight on 116 for 2, were powered by a fluent ton from de Boorder and a half-century from J Rawal. Piyush Chawla, the legspinner, grabbed four wickets while Ishanth Sharma, the mediumpacer, took three. Ravi Teja dominated the Indian reply with a well-made 46.

Day 1 report

New Zealand Under-19s 116 for 2 (Ravel 51*, de Boorder 35*) trail India Under-19s 124 (Rahane 56, Southee 4-48, Morgan 3-23) by 8 runs

An accomplished pace bowling performance put the New Zealand Under-19s firmly in the driving seat on the first day of the final Test against the India Under-19s at Christchurch's Bert Sutcliffe Oval. Put in to bat, the tourists could muster only 124 as medium-pacers Greg Morgan, Timothy Southee and Dean Bartlett ran amok on a good pitch.

Morgan, 17, struck a telling hat-trick with the Indians on 84 for 4. Sumeet Sharma and captain Piyush Chawla edged to second slip and Sarabjit Singh, the wicketkeeper, was trapped lbw as New Zealand seized the momentum. Only opener Ajinkya Rahane, with his second consecutive half-century, and Yo Mahesh (30), back from an injury lay-off, offered any resistance. Southee, whose 12 wickets wrecked the Indians at Dunedin, picked up four more to take his series tally to 18, and Bartlett, the Auckland right-arm medium-fast bowler, snared three.

At stumps, New Zealand were 116 for 2 with Jeet Ravel and Andrew de Boorder, the captain, unbeaten on 51 and 35 respectively. The two have added 47 so far.
