The opener Neil Broom blasted New Zealand A to their second consecutive win in the Twenty20 stage of the Emerging Players Tournament with a punishing 84 not out against the Australian Academy. Broom was responsible for setting up New Zealand's intimidating 5 for 207 as he pounded six sixes and seven fours in a 51-ball stay. The hosts stayed in touch in the opening stages with three wickets to the legspinner Cullen Bailey, who outfoxed James Marshall (30) after receiving some severe treatment, but they could not prevent a brutal partnership between Broom and Rob Nicol. The pair put on 115 in 50 deliveries as they found the boundaries easily off Luke Pomersbach, Aaron Finch and Craig Philipson. Nicol, who hit four sixes, slipped on the last ball for 55 off 27. Australia's reply through Luke Ronchi and Phillip Hughes was swift, but keeping up with the required rate was difficult. Ronchi dispatched sixes off consecutive balls off Andre Adams before falling to a miscue to deep midwicket shortly after reaching his half-century. Hughes stayed until he was caught short on 37 and when Moises Henriques went for 16 and Matthew Wade was run out smartly by Adams off his own bowling, the Academy had lost 3 for 11 at a crucial stage. The next five wickets went quickly and the innings ended after 19 overs. South Africa Emerging Players 5 for 140 (Philander 40*) beat Karnataka State Cricket Association XI 7 for 127 by 13 runs Vernon Philander showed his international class when he provided a vital late surge for the South Africa Emerging Players innings on the way to a 13-run win over Karnataka State Cricket Association XI. In the past month Philander has criss-crossed the globe playing one-day internationals in Northern Ireland before stepping down a rung to join his developing team-mates in Queensland for this series. After taking three wickets in South Africa's match against New Zealand on Monday night, Philander followed up today with a fierce 40 not out from 18 balls, muscling four sixes to give his side a much-needed push to 5 for 140. Heino Kuhn chipped in with 37 after Francois du Plessis posted 26, lifting them from the early damage of 2 for 9 caused by Vinay Kumar. Philander also landed a second blow when he had Bharat Chipli caught at third man for 22 on either side of breakthroughs from Johan Botha and he returned with immediate success for his final over. After C Raghu was dismissed for 22, Philander stepped up to knock over Kumar for 21 before his team-mates fought off the Karnataka challenge.
New Zealand A 2 for 98 (How 42*) beat Karnataka State Cricket Association XI 6 for 97 (Goud 33*) by eight wickets New Zealand A finished the Twenty20 contest with an unbeaten record after an easy win under lights over Karnataka State Cricket Association XI. After resting their two fast bowlers for the opening couple of fixtures, James McMillan and Hamish Bennett were unleashed and the Karnataka batsmen were unable to break free as they crawled to 6 for 97. McMillan captured two wickets as Karnataka tumbled to 3 for 23 and Bennett gave up seven runs in his four overs. Yere Goud, the captain, led with 33 but he was only assisted by Amit Verma's 26.
