Bangladesh's chances of notching up a much-needed win before the three-match one-day series kicks off were dashed as their second 50-over match against Northern Districts was washed out. Persistent showers forced officials to abandon play 41 overs into the hosts' innings at Hamilton's Seddon Park, with their score 173 for 7.

Young ND batsman Kane Williamson, player of the tournament in the recent Gillette Cup schools competition, was unbeaten on 47 from 56 balls amid consistent strikes from the Bangladeshi bowlers after ND chose to bat.

For the visitors, Nazmul Hossain, Shahadat Hossain and Abdur Razzak each took two wickets. Nazmul, the right-arm medium-fast bowler with limited Test and ODI experience, struck the first two blows before ND slipped to 85 for 4. Williamson and Mark Orchard (43) then added 73 to boost their side somewhat, Williamson hitting a pair of sixes and two fours, but two wickets from Shahadat in the 30th over had them in trouble again. Then came the rain.

The Bangladeshis have two more warm-up fixtures, against Auckland and a New Zealand XI on December 21 and 23 respectively, before three ODIs and two Tests.
