SA Invitational XI v New Zealanders, Bloemfontein, 2nd day

Oram puts Kiwis in command

Cricinfo staff

October 26, 2007

New Zealanders 318 (Vettori 99, McCullum 46, Abdullah 4-81) lead SA Invitational XI 156 (Amla 67, Oram 4-17) by 162 runs
Scorecard

New Zealand's seamers starred in helpful conditions on the second day of their tour match against a South African Invitational XI at Bloemfontein. Jacob Oram emerged as the pick of the attack with 4 for 17 from 14 overs, as the South Africans slumped to 156 all out in reply to New Zealand's 318.

Bad light brought the day to an early close before New Zealand could begin their second innings, but the Kiwis could take plenty encouragement from the 65.5 overs available. Shane Bond and Chris Martin bowled well with the new ball to reduce the South Africans to 33 for 3, before Oram entered the attack to rout the middle order.

Only Ahmed Amla, the brother of Hashim, was able to find an answer to the attack. He held the innings together with a gutsy 67, but was eighth man out as Daniel Vettori grabbed the last three wickets with his left-arm spin. Only one other batsman, the former Test wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile, was able to reach double figures. He made 25 before being caught by Michael Papps off Oram.

Brendon McCullum continued his good form with five dismissals behind the stumps - four catches and a stumping - while Vettori's 3 for 44 followed on from his face-saving 99 in New Zealand's innings.
