I would have opted for Martin Crowe since he had applied for the job. Martin is more a strategist than Gary as I remember Martin chose the grounds for his opponents for the 1992 world cup. Of course, its a different story that his startegy did not work against Pakistan twice. But I would still went for Martin.

I think India needed a coach in the John Wright mould and I think Gary Kirsten has similar attributes. He should just help the players with the planning and preparation. I doubt he is the kind of person who will fight with the media. If he can keep the media scrutiny on him down to a minimum, he should enjoy it. I hope he does well.

till recently i was very much pro foreign coach. But i am more than happy with the present manager. He was very good and deliver the results by winning Twenty20, winning two one days against Aus (Not to mention that they have won more than 14 ODI's on trot ) and a win against Pak ODI series and mostly test series win against them as well. I am very much sure that they can do very well in Australia as him as Assistant Coach. In spite of doing well he didn't get the job. I would hope that BCCI will appoint him as assistant Coach as we can see him as future Indian coach.

I am definately not at all happy with BCCI's decision..For Gods sake try and understand from people in India's point of view. Why arent we thinking of a geniune past bowler's ( Richard Hedlee..Glem McGrath) who can coach our players. Why are we chasing only bastman coach..I definately dont agree that batsman can be a good coach..it is always the bowler who can become a good coach and can understand the players mentality and can gell well within.

Gary Kirsten from a choice of so many world class coaches.... questionable. I am not saying he is not good. But its not known. First, he is no where near Yuvraj, leave alone the laxman, dravid, ganguly and the sachin. How would he handle the short comings of great players? He worked as a batting coach, how can he handle the aspects of game plans, fielding, bowling? Set ups for good batsmen to be bunnies... so on and so forth. See India's tour of pakistan in 2003. How we have fooled, Youhana (now Mohammed), Shoaib.... all those were wright's speciality. He was coaching kent and hence already had experience. Sanjay Manjrekar for all his wrong talk, is a bad commentator (and he prove it here again by not giving his comment) but is a capable coach. He should have been drafted in as assistant coach. Hoping out of hope that he would not plot the downfall of Sachin..... He has his own set of conspiracy theories and thats what is needed in the world of cricket coaching. Let us see Gary....

I feel that Kirstein will be a better coach than chappel because he is not so adamant during his playing days.He is also fit and played some big knocks in oDI and tests. So,he will bring that cool and competitive nature among the youngsters of Indian Team

I think Gary Kirsten is an excellent choice for the coach of Indian team. He is a low profile guy and is very gritty player just like our fielding coach Robin Singh. India needs a coach like him as he would help to instill some ideas from South African cricket. I am also delighted that BCCI did not appoint an Indian coach, as my reading of some of Indian coach candidates is that they are power hungry and egotistic individuals. Lalchand Rajput might be an exception and he should continue as Assistant Coach of the team.

BCCI has been obsessed with the idea that Indian team need a foriegn coach. Why one of our own(DESI) cant do it.Lack of self belief and respect is at its root.We Indians are second to none in any fields.Greg chappels stint and its poor outcome should have taught a lesson. Is BCCI capable of learning? A desi coah has strength of language and cltural identity with our players so communication can be easy. The fact that demi gods gavaskar and Ravi sastry dont want it shows the mentality and lipservice they provide for Indian cricket.Money is their focus and media celebrity their passion.A sensible manisWorld cup at loss when comes to BCCi.Being a peace loving hospitable NRI ,I certainly extend a welcome to MR.Kristen.May be he will succeed if god sachin and lord snooty approve him if not it wont be toolong before our immature media will look for blood and mindless fans burn effigie of Mr.Kristen.world cup may remain a dream.Good luck Mr.Kristen.

Amidst all predictions and assesments of Gary, it is nice to see someone not proclaiming anything. Especially an ex-cricketer as they usually seem to be clairvoyant. Sanjay is absolutely right. We have no facts on his coaching or stuff. But as we've seen with Wright, Woolmer, Moody et al, good, hard-working cricketers make better coaches than exceptional ones like Chappell, Kapil Dev, Miandad etc. In that respect Kirsten is a good choice. But success in coaching India is a different kettle of fish compared to any other coaching stints etc.

BCCI have done a good job of handing the reins of coaching the indian team to Gary kirsten. He is a good test and ODI player and that would be supportive to the Batsmen. It is also good that we do not have some one who is renound as the best coach because it would be unnecessary pressure on the team to live up to the coach's reputation and they may not concentrate on their own game. I hope Kiresten plays along with the team and let the players play the game on the field.
