Ravi Shastri

Australia v India, 4th Test, Adelaide, 2nd day

RP's fitness a concern - Ravi Shastri

January 25, 2008

Ravi Shatri feels that India batted well, especially the tail, and Anil Kumble led the team from the front. Now with a good first innings total on the board, it is upto the Indian bowlers to deliver, and hence RP Singh's fitness will be important. For Australia, Mathew Hayden is the key, and his innings will be the crucial one

i feel that Indian bowlers would always suffer from injury problem the reason being that they are not rotated.for example recently when we had zaheer bowling really well , he just kept on bowling till he got injured.there has to be a pool of atleast 8-10 pacers who can be rotated effectively so that this injury crisis may be resolved.in past years we have lost many good talents who could have served the country for much longer duration like balaji, nehra etc so this is a serious issue.i would further like to add that fitness of players has to be taken care of at the domestic level itself otherwise we will have players like munaf patel who have real good performances in domestic cricket not being translated to prolonged and effective international performances.

am curious about the choice of having irfan open both bowling and batting. also is ganguly not capable of opening? i'd like to see ganguly and sehwag open, laxman at number three and drop dravid down as sheet anchor.

It is vital that India get early break throughs tomorrow morning in the first session. They have posted a good total with the bat and now they have to show what they can do with the ball, by putting the ball in the right areas and being patient. One last effort is needed by the bowlers.

as usual a very balanced comment from one of the best commentators ravi shastri. i agree that tomorrow its going to be decided where this match is heading towarsds. india will have to pick their spot and find a way to get rid of hayden who seems to be invincible. the way he was batting today he seemed to be toying with indian bowlers. it is really difficult to bowl to him. anything full will be driven and anything short will be pulled. he is a nightmare for bowlers specially when the conditions are so good for batting. kumble's and bhajji's effort were outstanding. its good to see indian tail wag. but the most annoying thing is the failure of indian vice-captain. with odi series on the door he must have used the opportunity to score as many runs as possible. now, india will be playing with an inexperienced team whose captain is not in touch.

Yes, Kumble and Bhaji's knock helped india to score more than 500 runs and Now India can put pressure on Australia. Two spinners are Key for India on the third day of the match to restrict Australia less than 400 or 450 runs and similarly Hayden's innings is key for Australia to get big score in their first innings.
