1989

"This edition has never behaved normally," wrote Graeme Wright, while compiling the Almanack on what he called "a season to forget". The wettest July since 1939, bad pitches, and a continuation in poor standards at Test and county level were the main reasons why. After England used four different captains in five Tests against West Indies that summer, much was made of the captaincy, and Graham Gooch emerged as the saviour to lead English cricket again. Elsewhere, Peter Roebuck, then Somerset's captain, paid tribute to Graeme Hick after his 405 not out, and Tony Lewis, the former England captain, provided a tribute to Sunil Gavaskar, who retired that year.
